Class Outline:
This sewing introduction class is designed for someone that is brand spanking new to sewing a looking for a comprehensive introduction into using a sewing machine. This course will provide a very thorough introduction to the sewing machine. You will learn everything you need to know to get started. There will also be a lesson on how to use a sewing pattern and how to properly cut fabric. We will use these new skills to construct a tote bag.Date & Time:
March 7th. This is a one day workshop. 11 am - 6 pm with a half-hour break
The Madrid Tote:
This versatile tote is a large carry-all bag featuring two exterior pockets, mitered corners, and webbing straps. It is a beginner level project that will allow you to learn several fundamental techniques to build your sewing repertoire.
Prerequisite:
There is no prerequisite for taking this class. It’s perfect for someone looking to begin their sewing hobby and gain a thorough understanding of the sewing machine and basic techniques.What you will learn:
• The ins and outs of a sewing machine, along with how to thread and operate it.
• Beginner stitches and their settings
• How to use a sewing pattern
• How to properly cut fabric using a pattern

You will need to purchase fabric and coordinating thread for your bag.Before purchasing fabric, first, choose your bag style (view 1 or 2).

Bag style choices:
View 1: The same fabric is used throughout the bag. One fabric is needed.
View 2: A contrasting fabric is selected for the pocket. Two fabrics are needed.Fabric Quantity:
View 1: • 1.1 Meters or 1 yard
View 2: • .6 meters or 5/8 yards of self fabric (for main bag)
• .4 meters or 11/2 yard of contrast fabric (for pocket).Recommended Fabric:
Medium to heavyweight denim, waxed cotton, light to mid-weight canvas, oilcloth.Webbing:
Natural cotton webbing will be provided in this class; This will be used for the straps. If you would prefer to make a bag with a different colour strap, please bring your own choice of webbing. You will need:
3.5 meters or 3.8 yards of 1 ¼” – 1 ½ wide webbing -
• Madrid tote pattern and instructions
• Webbing for straps
• Use of sewing machine and studio tools
• Lots of tea, coffee, and nibbles
