Lola Sewalong: Constructing the lower dress
In today's portion of the Lola sewalong, we will be constructing the pockets and lower part of the dress. Let's start with the pockets.
Constructing the lower dress:
- Begin by sewing a finishing stitch along the upper pocket edge, either with a serge or zig-zag stitch.
- Press the sewn upper edge.
- Turn the upper edge towards the wrong side by 1 1/2" (4 cm). You will see notches at the side edges, which serve as a guide for this fold. Press the folded edge.
- You can use a seam gauge along the edge to ensure the fold is an even 1 1/2" (4 cm).
- Once pressed, pin the folded edge in place.
- Secure the upper hem of the pocket with either a twin needle or a regular zig-zag stitch. Set your machine up for the sewing option of your choice.
- If you are using a twin needle, you will sew this stitch from the right side of the pocket at
1" (2.5 cm) seam allowance. -
If you are sewing with a zig-zag stitch, set the machine to a regular zig-zag stitch and sew with the wrong side of the pocket facing you. Sew along the upper edge of the pocket at 1" (2.5 cm) seam allowance.
- Place the Pocket onto the Lower Side (H) piece. Both pieces should be facing right side up. Align the bottom and side edges, matching notches.
- The upper pocket edge will align to a notch on the side edges of piece H.
- Pin the pieces together along the sides and lower edges.
- With the sewing machine, baste the pieces together at 1/4" ( 6 mm) seam allowance.
- Place a Lower Side Panel/ Pocket right side up.
- Place the Lower Front Center (G) piece right side up along the longer edge of the Lower Side Panel.
- Place the Lower Back Center (I) piece right side up along the shorter edge of the Lower Side Panel.
- Place pieces G & I to face right sides together with the Lower Side panel and pin together.
- Sew the pieces together.
- Repeat steps by attaching the remaining Lower Back Centre (I) and Lower Font Centre (G) to the Lower Side (H).
- Press all seams towards front and back centre pieces (G & I).
Congrats on finishing the lower portion of your Lola Dress! I

How to sew a centered zipper
A centered zipper is one of the most usefull zippers to be able to sew. They are commonly used in skirts, dresses, and pants, as well as cushion covers and handbags. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to sew a centered zipper using directional sewing, which avoids the fabric from shifting in different directions once the zipper is sewn in.
